Telecommunications companies have significantly accelerated their 5G network expansion into rural areas, bringing high-speed internet connectivity to millions of previously underserved Americans.
The initiative, supported by federal funding from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, has resulted in 5G coverage reaching 78% of rural counties, up from just 45% at the beginning of 2024.
This expansion is expected to boost economic development in rural communities, enable remote work opportunities, and improve access to telemedicine and online education services.
Industry leaders predict that by the end of 2025, 95% of rural areas will have access to 5G networks, closing the digital divide that has long separated urban and rural America.
